Abstract
| 1945 was in many respects a year of contradictions. Liberation and occupation, new beginnings and reckoning, extreme deprivation and the hope of reconstruction were all simultaneously present. The social tensions that had accumulated during the Horthy era and the atrocities committed under the Arrow Cross regime awaited remedy, while the emerging democracy was being distorted by the Soviet occupying army. The war had ended, but violence and uncertainty persisted. It was in this milieu that the ambitious public intellectual and scholar Gyula Kornis was elected president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA). It soon became apparent, however, that in the constantly shifting political and power landscape, previously accumulated knowledge, experience, and prestige did not yield the expected results. This study follows, in parallel with the Academy’s struggle for survival, the personal battle of the private individual to preserve the integrity of his own life path. As President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Gyula Kornis had to face political attacks, the devaluation of the institution's prestige, and severe financial incapacity. And while he was the president of what had once been the country’s most prestigious institution, he was forced to defend himself before a People”s Court as a “fascist criminal”.
