Abstract

In the present study, we analyze a report that was sent to Emperor Maximilian I's secretary, Jacopo Bannisio, at the beginning of the year 1510. Through this analysis, we present the circulation of information and the functioning of information networks during that period. We attempted to identify the sources of the information in the report and to present them in the context of the European diplomacy of the time. The previously unknown document contains new information about Vlad cel Tânăr (Vlad the Young), Mihnea cel Rău (Mihnea the Bad), the siege of Rhodes, the actions of the Safavid Shah Ismail I against the Ottoman Empire, as well as the plague epidemic of 1510 in southern Europe. We also aimed to demonstrate that the recipient of the report, Jacopo Bannisio, was a true gatherer and distributor of news, as well as a highly skilled builder of cultural and political networks. By analyzing these information networks, whose main actors were the learned humanists of the time, it becomes clearer that the intellectual, political, and diplomatic connections between the two cultural spheres – the Western Catholic Latin sphere and the Eastern Byzantine Greek and Slavic sphere – of Europe at that time were much more intense than we had previously thought.
