Abstract
This study develops a quad-objective SUMO-based framework for comparing cyclist-safety treatments at signalised urban intersections, considering TTC-based vehicle-bicycle conflicts, average motor-vehicle time loss, total motor-vehicle CO₂ emissions and an ordinal implementation-cost score. Four synthetic intersection archetypes were evaluated under a conventional baseline, leading bicycle interval, protected bicycle phase and shifted bicycle-lane treatment where geometrically applicable, resulting in 15 scenarios and 75 stochastic simulation runs. The protected bicycle phase produced the largest reductions in simulated conflict potential across TTC thresholds but also generated the highest operational and environmental burdens. The leading bicycle interval provided lower-cost, moderate safety improvement, while the shifted bicycle lane was strongly geometry-sensitive and most balanced where the layout supported it. The findings provide controlled scenario-comparison evidence for decision support, not direct crash prediction.
