Abstract
In this study, we examine the detachment stability behavior of axisymmetric bi-material composite fibrils. Our goal is to determine the stable and unstable detachment domains as a function of different geometric and material parameters, such as layer thickness or the elastic modulus ratio. The numerical results are obtained using finite element simulations. Two cases are investigated: edge detachment and center detachment. We use the derivative of the energy release rate with respect to the contact surface area to determine the stability behavior. In our parametric study, we vary the dimensionless thickness of the soft tip layer, the ratio of the elastic moduli of the materials, and the Poisson’s ratio. The stability maps shown in the paper are based on the evaluation of more than half a million finite element simulations. Our results show that for both types of detachment, there exists a critical layer thickness above which only unstable detachment can develop. We also show that increasing the ratio of the elastic moduli increases the size of the stable region, but there is a lower limit below which no stable detachment is observed, regardless of the size of the defect. Reducing the Poisson’s ratio decreases the size of the stable region but has little effect on its overall shape. These new results contribute to a better understanding of the detachment mechanisms in composite fibrillar adhesive systems and provide a basis for further research on other material pairings and geometric configurations.
