Abstract

This study provides a descriptive summary of three poem analyses by István Bibó. In his literary reflections on the poems of Gyula Illyés, Miklós Radnóti, and Attila József, Bibó articulates themes such as virtues without explanation, profound faith, and love of the free individual – ideas that have inspired both his contemporaries and later generations. The reflections transcribed from tape recordings may also be integrated into the secondary-school literature curricula as materials that can support the self-reflective development of students. Therefore, their relevance extends beyond history education to literary studies, while Bibó intended his own analyses to be free of literary conventions, placing them instead within what he called a series of ponderings on “why it is beautiful”.
