Abstract

Both Hungarian and international press historians agree that Franz Joseph could not be depicted in a distorted manner, nor could his actions be criticized in the humorous magazines of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Nonetheless, this study examines the methods used to depict the king, and the situations in which the monarch appeared in Hungarian caricatures. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate how a humorous genre can be used to express loyalty or to criticize the monarch’s policies and methods of exercising power. The study illustrates, with examples, the portrayal of Franz Joseph’s various roles, as well as the fictional roles into which the artists cast him.
