Abstract

A 18. század útkereséséből a francia forradalom mutatott irányt. A francia nemzettest törvényi bővítése újraértelmezte a hadkiegészítés lehetőségeit is. Az inszurrekció modernizációját nem lehetett tovább halasztani, azonban az irányvonalat Károly főherceg 1806. évi hadreformja szolgáltatta. | We typically examine the insurrection as an institution of Hungarian national defence based on feudal foundations. In a classical manner, it intertwines the social fabric of the Natio Hungarica with the issues surrounding the exercitus hungaricus. Following the Ottoman period, the cessation of its former role – the demonstration of force – became apparent, as this was slowly but surely taken over by the regularising military forces of the Habsburg Empire. Amid the 18th-century search for a new path, the French Revolution provided direction. The legal expansion of the French nation also reinterpreted the possibilities of military conscription. The modernisation of the insurrection could no longer be postponed, but the direction was set by Archduke Charles’s military reform of 1806. Palatine Joseph and his administration were tasked in 1808 with creating a unified territorial defence system in the Kingdom of Hungary, based on previous mobilisation and battlefield experiences, that was compatible with the Habsburg Empire’s military conscription system. The draft sought to reflect the dual status of the exercitus hungaricus within the empire, taking into account both the Kingdom of Hungary’s constitutional status and the Habsburg dynasty’s centralisation efforts. In my paper, by examining the palatine’s draft and the 1808 legislative provisions derived from it, I seek to re-evaluate the modernised institution of the insurrection of 1808–1809. My objective is to move beyond the exclusively Hungarian military interpretation of the insurrection and situate it within the Habsburg Empire’s search for a new path after 1805.
