Abstract

This study delves into the pivotal moments in the history of the Baťa (Bata) company and the Baťa family, with a keen focus on the first half of the 20th century. It scrutinises seven critical “crossroads” that significantly influenced the company’s trajectory – including the death of Tomáš Baťa, the disintegration of Czechoslovakia, the threat of war, a tax amnesty, the creation of offshore entities, accusations of collaboration, and post-war nationalisation. Through an interdisciplinary approach that intertwines legal, historical, and economic perspectives, the paper aims to present a comprehensive view of the intricate relationships and decisions that shaped the Baťa family’s business amidst dramatic social changes. Key themes include the strategic responses to political and economic threats, legal structures safeguarding family wealth, and the complex legacy of the company post-WWII, including accusations of collaboration with Nazi Germany and subsequent legal battles over property and reputation. The study underscores the remarkable resilience of the Baťa business, its profound influence on the Czechoslovak economy, and its global expansion despite significant political upheaval.
