Abstract

Integrated mineralogical, petrological, geochemical, and geochronological investigations of S-type granitoids and their variably deformed or metamorphosed equivalents reveal three distinct Paleozoic magmatic episodes in the Tisza Mega-unit of the Carpathian–Pannonian region. (1) Early Ordovician (∼480–470 Ma) ages were obtained from orthogneisses of Papuk Mt. (Slavonian Mts), which are interpreted as products of syn-collisional to post-orogenic processes along the northern Gondwanan margin. (2) Late Devonian–Early Carboniferous (∼370–340 Ma) magmatism is represented by the Codru granodiorites from the SW Apuseni Mts and granitoids from the Battonya–Pusztaföldvár Basement Ridge (eastern Pannonian Basin). These rocks exhibit mixed arc-related and syn-collisional signatures, consistent with the Variscan subduction-to-collision transition and possible slab break-off. Mineralogical, geochemical, and geochronological data support correlations between these igneous bodies. (3) Middle Permian (∼270 Ma) magmatism is recorded by monzogranitic pebbles from Lower Miocene siliciclastic deposits in the western Mecsek Mts and is interpreted as post-collisional crustal magmatism coeval with rift-related A-type magmatism and associated volcanic activity in the region. On a regional scale, Paleozoic igneous rocks of the Tisza Mega-unit correlate with those of the Western Carpathians, where comparable Early Ordovician, Early Carboniferous, and Middle Permian magmatic events have been documented. These similarities indicate a broadly shared Paleozoic tectono-magmatic evolution along the northern margin of Gondwana and later within the Central European Variscides.
