Abstract

The inflation and misrepresentation of rescue are phenomena in several countries, such as Poland, the Netherlands, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Hungary. None of this means that there was not significant rescue in these countries or that the phenomenon of rescue is not significant to research, discussion and commemoration. But the overemphasis on rescue and its misrepresentation often accompanies efforts to create a usable past, an idealised and, sometimes, even totally fictitious past, about which the nation can be proud. The task of the historians is to ensure that rescue is addressed with all its complexities in a historically accurate and evidence-based context. The study of rescue attempts during the Holocaust by Jews and non-Jews, whether large-scale or small-scale, is an important part of the history of the Holocaust. But as important as rescue is, when it is intentionally inflated, misused to mask issues of responsibility for persecution and murder, or intentionally taken out of context for whatever reason, it becomes a significant component of Holocaust distortion. Like all aspects of the history that we explore and teach, discussion of rescue during the Holocaust should be based on firm historical evidence and objective, thoughtful analysis.
