Abstract

1944. szeptember 26. és október 5. között Nagyszalonta öt alkalommal cserélt gazdát a harcok során. A város szeptember 26-i szovjet–román megszállását követően 30-án a magyar 1. páncéloshadosztály visszafoglalta a települést. Az ekkor felfedezett, a szovjet–román megszállás során elkövetett atrocitások a magyar háborús propagandának köszönhetően, a szovjet háborús bűncselekmények szimbólumává váltak. A néhány napig tartó magyar uralom során a magyar csapatok igyekeztek fellépni a szovjetekkel kollaboráló helyiekkel szemben, ennek keretében pedig a helyi roma lakosságot tették felelőssé az elkövetett atrocitásokért. A magyar katonai és csendőri egységek a szovjetekkel való kollaborálás vádjára hivatkozva két, romák ellen irányuló tömeggyilkosságot is elkövettek a térségben. Október 2-án Nagyszalontán 18 főt, három nappal később pedig Doboz településen további 20 főt végeztek ki. | Between 26 September and 5 October 1944, Salonta changed hands five times during the fighting. Following the Soviet–Romanian occupation of the town on 26 September, it was recaptured on 30 September by the Hungarian 1st Armoured Division. The atrocities discovered after the Soviet–Romanian occupation, amplified by Hungarian wartime propaganda, soon became a symbol of Soviet war crimes. During the few days of renewed Hungarian control, the Hungarian military sought to take action against local inhabitants accused of collaborating with the Soviet forces. In this context, the local Roma population was held responsible for the atrocities committed during the occupation. Citing accusations of collaboration with the Soviets, Hungarian military and gendarmerie units carried out two massacres targeting Roma civilians in the region. On 2 October, eighteen Roma were executed in Salonta, and three days later a further twenty were executed in the village of Doboz.
