Abstract
| This study examines the historical construction and transformation of Jerusalem’s image from the perspectives of cultural history and communication theory. Its central thesis is that the social and cultural history of Jerusalem may also be understood as a history of the city’s image. We approach urban image as neither a static representation nor a fixed set of associations, but as a historically contingent and culturally embedded phenomenon, continuously constructed and reconstructed through processes of communication. From this perspective, Jerusalem’s image history can be understood as a millennia-long process in which successive cultural, religious, political, and social layers of meaning have accumulated and contributed to shaping the city’s changing image and significance. Drawing on a communication studies perspective, the study examines key periods in Jerusalem’s history and uses them as a basis for reconstructing the principal stages in the development of its image. It identifies distinct image periods, explores potential turning points and their historical, social, and cultural contexts, and examines the factors that have contributed to the formation and transformation of Jerusalem’s image over time.
