Abstract

Aim: This paper examines the underrecognised victimisation of adolescent boys, focusing on physical violence, homicide, sexual exploitation, bullying, and cyberviolence. It seeks to strengthen recognition of boys’ vulnerabilities within gender-inclusive child protection and crime prevention.Methodology: The analysis considers the forms, extent, and potential drivers of violence against adolescent boys, examining masculinity stereotypes, gaps in legal protection, institutional bias, and limitations in existing child protection practices.Findings: The paper argues that gendered assumptions and institutional shortcomings can obscure boys’ victimisation and weaken protective responses. It highlights the need to address their specific vulnerabilities within a balanced approach to protecting both boys and girls.Value: The paper advocates a gender-sensitive, evidence-based approach to child protection and crime prevention, combining recognition of boys’ needs with policies promoting positive masculinity and the safety of all children.
