Abstract
China China China!!! — This was the title of an exhibition at the Palazzi Strozzi and the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in 2009. The name reflected one of the greatest developments of art markets in recent decades, echoing all over the international art world: the spectacular rise of China.2 By that year, it has become impossible for collectors, curators, and auction houses to neglect Chinese artworks and buyers. Works from the Middle Kingdom were sold for higher prices than ever, a large number of Chinese collectors appeared at international auctions for the first time, and the sales of Chinese auction houses reached a level that seemed unimaginable before. In 2009, it seemed that China had reached the top. This was, however, only the beginning, not the end.
