Abstract
Integrity decisions on steam generator tubes rely on eddy current testing (ECT), which gives little information on the outer surface or on the damage mechanism, while secondary-side visual inspections are general surveys not directed at the ECT indications. This paper develops the concept of a remotely operated, ECT-guided targeted optical inspection for the secondary side. The inspection task is defined on the ECT target set, and five requirements are derived: traceability, position verification, image quality, foreign material exclusion and a strictly complementary role. A closed-form geometric analysis of the inter-tube lanes and of the usable circumferential arc shows that horizontal WWER (Water-Cooled, Water-Moderated Energy Reactor) bundles with in-line arrangement allow perpendicular viewing, whereas the interior of triangular-pitch vertical bundles practically does not, and that depth of field and glare, rather than resolution, limit image quality. A structured image data model and a staged validation strategy are proposed. Artificial intelligence (AI) is treated as an optional complement for image quality control, position identification and condition classification, subject to qualification. Finally, the need to develop the inspectability and monitoring into small modular and Generation IV reactors with longer fuel cycles and design lives is discussed, using the AP300 as an example.
