Abstract

This study examines the impact of agricultural diversification on household food security in two contrasting rural sites, Baskoudre and Foutrigui. It employs a cross-sectional comparative design based on primary data collected from 160 female farmers (80 per site). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression models. The main explanatory variables are the Simpson Diversification Index (SDI) and the Simply Crop Density (SCD), supplemented by control variables such as age, educational level, and household size. The analyses were conducted to determine the direction and significance of the relationships between agricultural diversification and food security. The results show that agricultural diversification generally has a positive effect on food security, although the strength of this effect varies across contexts. In Baskoudre, both the SDI and SCD have a positive and statistically significant influence on the FCS and the IDDS, indicating that diversified agricultural systems improve both dietary quality and diversity. Household size and educational level also emerge as important determinants at this site. In Foutrigui, the SDI remains positively and significantly associated with both food security indicators, whereas the SCD exhibits weak or slightly negative effects on the FCS. Socio-demographic variables are generally non-significant in this site, suggesting the presence of more pronounced structural constraints.
