Abstract
| Green infrastructure—as a holistic and nature-based planning paradigm—integrates ecological processes and ecosystem services into the urbanized environment, thereby addressing the complex challenges posed by climate change, urbanization, and social issues. In examining green infrastructure, three fundamental questions must be addressed: why, where, and how green infrastructure elements are applied. That is, what motivations, methodologies, and spatial contexts characterize the application of green infrastructure elements from both historical and contemporary perspectives.Green infrastructure elements are not merely static “green patches” or “aesthetic additions” that passively appear within the built environment; rather, they constitute evolving, dynamic, and functional systems that actively respond to environmental and social changes. Green infrastructure has thus developed into an integrated system that contributes, among other functions, to the stability of ecological systems, the maintenance of biodiversity, urban climate regulation, water management, and the mitigation of heat stress, thereby improving quality of life for urban inhabitants. The continuous development of green infrastructure is therefore grounded in the emergence of synergies between the built and natural environments.
