Abstract
Karst regions are very vulnerable with respect to natural and human-activity related hazards. The examination of broken and slim intact speleothems in Bulgarian caves (Varteshkata, Elata, Snezanka and Eminova caves) allow estimating an upper limit for horizontal peak ground acceleration (PGA) generated by paleo-earthquakes. The investigation is carried out in two separate parts: PART I Non-intrusive in situ measurements of speleothems in caves; PART II Oscillation of stalagmites-theoretical considerations and results.
