Abstract
The vertical zonation of the algal coating int he two largest Hungarian sodic lakes was studied. 57 taxa were determined from the Lake Fertő and 59 from the Lake Velence. The top few centimetres seem distinct in both lakes, while below this stratum, two groups can be distinguished. The top level can be characterised by low abundance and low chlorophyll-a content and a high ratio of dead cells. The second group is characterised by great abundance, high chlorophyll-a content. In the third group, the abundance as well as the clorophyll-a content are again smaller (approximately, half of the preceding group). In respect of the vertical zonation, the effect of wave movement and light supply were found to be of decisive importance.
