Abstract
The Natural History of Pliny the Elder was the first work in which the trade-route to India was described, leading from Coptos to Berenike, a port on the Red Sea across the Eastern Desert. However, the exact meaning of two significant expressions ( praesidium and deverticulum ) remain controversial in these passages. The written sources and the findings of local archeological excavations help to interpret the meaning of these words.
