Abstract
Theocritus’ Idyll 7 informs us about the sources of Theocritus’ poetry and about his set of artistic values. Simichidas and Lycidas are allegorical personae representing the sources and themes of Theocritus’ poetry. The singing contest in Id . 7 can be interpreted as an ironical self-appreciation of Theocritus’ poetical work.
