Abstract
The article analyzes the transformation of one of the semiotic elements in the play of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya" in the Russian theater at the borderline between the 20th and 21st century. The used materials are from four performances of the play on Moscow stage – the performances of Sergei Solo vyov in Maly Theatre, of Alexander Sabinin in Et Cetera theater, of Rimas Tuminas in Vahtangov theater and of Anrdey Konchalovsky in Mossovet theater. In the different interpretations of the "map of Africa" as a theatrical sign, the changes were sought in the aesthetic paradigm between two centuries and the formation of a new "horizon of expectation" of the Russian spectator between two different socio- cultural epochs.
