Abstract

Amphibians and reptiles are declining globally, subsequently, the protection of their habitats has become an urgent priority, especially in protected areas, such as the Nature 2000 network including the Mély-völgy situated in the valley of Tócó River (Code: HUHN20122). The aim of this study, on one hand, is to survey amphibian and reptile species with special focus on Nature 2000 SCI indicator species. On the other hand, this paper shortly summarizes the major threats for the local herpetofauna and mitigation opportunities against them. We used three different methods in the spring period of 2014 to detect amphibians and reptiles. Due to low precipitation during spring only nine herpetofauna species (Lissotriton vulgaris, Bombina bombina, Hyla arborea, Rana arvalis, Pelophylax ridibundus, Pelophylax kl. esculentus, Emys orbicularis, Lacerta agilis, Natrix natrix) were found while earlier observations and the literature listed ten amphibian and four reptile species including three important Nature 2000 SCI indicator species for the Mély-völgy. Four important refuge areas were located at the study site. Unfortunately, the local herpetofauna is threatened by several factors such as habitat pollution by pesticides, fragmentation by roads and railway, and disappearance of aquatic and terrestrial refuges by aridification and illegal cultivation. To minimize these negative impacts it is important to restrict local pesticide use, create habitat buffers, wildlife fencing and a tunnel system and to reconstruct the hydrological regime of the Tócó River catchment.
