Abstract
The agglomeration behaviour of Z-alpha-phenylcinnamic acid was studied in the solution phase with FTIR spectroscopy. Dimer formation through hydrogen bonding of the carboxylic groups was found to be predominant; however, the structured bands in the 2710-3580 cm(-1) region indicated multimerization to an appreciable extent. Deconvolution of the bands and fitting with Gaussian curves allowed the separation of multimeric components from monomers and dimers. The relative contributions of these structural units could be evaluated in a semiquantitative way.
