Abstract
Cytolethal distending toxins are widespread bacterial protein toxins which are detected with increasing frequency. CDT production is characteristic in Escherichia coli strains of human and animal origin, both from intestinal and extraintestinal infections. CDT represent a relatively new family of toxins, and there are very few works on the subject written in Hungarian. Therefore in the present work the authors summarize the epidemiology of CDT-producing bacteria with emphasis on E. coli strains, CDT’s mode of action on the cellular level, its role in pathogenesis and the genetic background of its distribution.
