Abstract
The hydrogenative ring-opening of 1,1-diMe- (1) and 1,1,2,2-tetraMe-cyclopro-pane (2) and the competitive hydrogenation of cyclopropane-olefin mixtures (1 + + 2-Me-2-butene and 2 + 2,4-diMe-2-pentene) were studied over silica-supported Pt, Pd and Rh catalysts at 318 K and 373 K. The cyclopropanes react over a metallic surface and their reaction characteristics are influenced by the hydrogen pressure. In the competitive hydrogenation the olefin creates a hydrogenrich carbonaceous overlayer which prevents the transformations of the cyclopropanes. The olefins, however, are hydrogenated over this irreversibly bound layer. These competitive reactions reveal fine differences between reacting surfaces and provide an easy method of detecting hydrogen-rich carbonaceous over-layers.
