Abstract
Reacting to developments in building technologies of rival reinforced concrete bridges, new methods have appeared in the erection of steel- and composite bridges. A common feature of these methods is the ever-increasing size and mass of structures to be moved in one piece. Moving steel- and composite bridges is more complex than moving concrete structures, since they are more sensitive to temporary influences. This paper discusses experiences in methods of moving large structures, gathered on a number of major river bridges during the last 15 years. The longest of these structures measured 1060 m and the heaviest weighed 8900 tons.
