Abstract

The language of the Russian press becoming more and more similar to everyday speech is one of the most significant stylistic changes in the Nineties. The influence of well-known political, socio-cultural and economic factors resulted in the modification of the communicative aim of articles. The elements of relaxed conversational style and the inclusion of syntactic features that are characteristic of everyday speech are used for example in the weekly Moskovskie Novosti (May and April 1999). Furthermore, the frequent appli-cation of abbreviations and verbal contractions, the preference of emotionally expressive ele-ments, the propagation of typical word-formation observable in conversational style can also serve as examples of the widespread process of stylistic change. The so-called "razgovor-nost´" is primarily determined according to the literary form and the topic of the article, but the gender of the journalist can also be a determining factor.           At the same time, an opposing process: the use of word structures and expressions typical of the scientific and official stylistic layer can also be detected. These expressions, often bor-rowed from English, fill the vacuum that was created after the disappearance of frequently used words in the Soviet political regime. In the case of high standard weekly and daily papers, these two tendencies usually counterbalance each other.
