Abstract

This essay is an examination of the concept of American civil religion nearly 50 years after Robert N. Bellah’s essay brought it to the attention of American social science, and a broad survey of the main trends of the scholarship on the subject. My aim is to find at least a tentative answer to the question whether any of the several interpretations has relevance for further research in the vastly different social and cultural milieu of the 2010s United States.
