Abstract
The word βούβρωστις is problematic. In Horn., Il. 24, 532 it meant a goddess "who devours the cattle". The starting point of this concept is the idea that cattle might be stolen at any time, and the owner, not understanding it, interprets the disappearance as a malign act of such a goddess. As the result of a complex development, the word βούβρωστις has later taken on the meaning of "ravenous hunger".
