Abstract
Miroslav Krleža’s work Flags is considered to be a key novel in the history of Croatian literature. The protagonist Kamill Emericzi falls in love with Anna Borongay, who is identified by Krleža’s researchers as Anna Lesznai, the famous poet, in spite of the writer’s protest against this idea. The present paper examines how Dezső Orbán’s painting, which was definitely modelled on Anna Lesznai and returned to Hungary from Australia in 2011, could have become a source of inspiration for Krleža to create the female protagonist of the novel.
