Abstract
The regulations and procedures of the International Telecommunication Union concerning the use of the radio spectrum are explained, and the role is outlined of its Radiocommunication Sector responsible for recommending technical aspects governing service allocations and permitted transmission properties. It is stressed that existing radio services are determined by a combination of operational requirements and the characteristics of radio-wave propagation. Present usage of the different frequency bands for the separate terrestrial radio services is discussed.
