Abstract

In our research we performed bead-on-plate autogenous TIG welds on 2 mm thick UNS S32205 (EN 1.4462) duplex stainless steel sheets using argon and ar-gon + nitrogen shielding with + 2 N2, + 5 N2 and + 10 N2 nitrogen content. The welds were reheated in solid-state in argon atmosphere, using Gleeble® 1500 thermal simulator. Both in the as-welded and reheated state the austenite fraction, total nitrogen content and thermoelectric power values were measured. In our pa-per we found correlation between the austenite content, the total nitrogen content and the thermoelectric power value as a function of the used shielding gas and thermal cycle. We also attempted to differentiate between the total dissolved ni-trogen and interstitial atomic nitrogen. This paper is a part of an extended project in order to understand the sometimes controversial effects of nitrogen on duplex stainless steel welding.
