Abstract
Endoscopic camera image analysis in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), especially in surgical robotics can extract relevant information, which can increase patient safety and reduce recovery time through helping the surgeons. Image-based decision support can ease the cognitive load on the surgeon, furthermore, surgical subtask automation can help in monotone, time consuming tasks. Extracted information from camera image analysis can be utilized for automated instrument positioning, giving warnings to the surgeon in critical situations, and even for surgical skill assessment and training.
