Abstract
The color etching of LDX 2101 and LDX 2404 lean duplex stainless steel weld microstructures is optimized for an image analysis characterization process to determine the austenite-ferrite phase ratio. The results are validated in the weld metal with Feritscope and electron back scattered diffraction methods, which are comparableto ASTM E562 manual point count results. The optimized etching and subsequent image analysis process enables an accurate measurement of the austenite-ferrite ratio in the narrow heat affected zone of these duplex stainless steel welds in addition to the fusion zone, where the application of other measurement methods is very circumstantial.
