Abstract
Intellectuals have a strong tradition of public participation in Eastern Europe, including Hungary. They have played important roles in regime and elite changes in this region. Today, Hungary’s political community arguably faces a moral and social crisis once more, and the capacity of the elites for managing the crisis is widely debated. The public engagement of intellectuals is on the rise again, and the question of the autonomy of the intellectual elite is often raised. My analysis focuses on that particular group of Hungarian intellectuals whose selfperceived and socially acknowledged function is to participate in public affairs and influence public opinion.
