Abstract

Integration of the Hungarian economy into the global value chains has been ongoing since the mid-1990s. Emergence of multinational corporations in Hungary has resulted in new phenomena not only in the input and output markets but also in national economy. Decisions of parent companies have an impact on operations of their subsidiaries, however, the proper accounting of such effects poses a challenge to national accounts experts. This study examines whether a strategic decision of a Hungarian multinational company may have a significant effect on the Hungarian GDP volume index. To answer this question, the authors present an example of what decisions may lead to reorganization within a company group. Based on annual accounts and industry corporate price indices, a method is presented for quantifying the changes in gross value added, thereby estimating their impact on the GDP volume index. The calculations prove that this effect can be significant; therefore, the continuous profiling of multinational companies is extremely important for statisticians and economists.
