Abstract

Restoration and expansion of a more than one century old theatre building raises the question of examining parameters: What historic elements should be preserved to maintain the monumental building status, what changes to later additions are required and finally how to integrate ideas suited to the twenty-first century? The answer can be found in the past by undertaking a faithful restoration of the existing building and seeking out how to expand upon the original structural logic to create a contemporary extension and landscaping plan. The original pagoda like baroque theatre now sits upon a modern plinth creating a sense of dramatic approach to the functional and architectural presence.
