Abstract

Confraternities and Social Changes. The fluctuating dynamic of confraternities at Csongrád during the 19th century. Antal Hegyi, the most impressive parish priest of the 19th century Csongrád (Hungary, 1886-1902)reorganized the whole structure of church life in the little Roman Catholic town. He thought that confraternities are the perfect "tools" to deepen the faith of believers and and strenghten his own social basis in the same time. So he established new religious brotherhoods and renewed the older ones. He made significant efforts to place them under his strict direction and kept his chaplains from communal leader functions away. The only thin which ewoked hard opposition within the church community was the political ambition of the priest. Antal Hegyi behaved like a citizen and knew his political rights pretty clear. His ideology was radically new, comparing to his predecessors in Csongrád, so its nothing to wonder why his judgment divided the group of believers. In this paper I intend to analyze the organization methods of Antal Hegyi, the parish priest of Csongrád at the end of the 19th century.
