Abstract

Along the Croatian - Hungarian border on the Drava axis, in an extended line from the Mura region to Vojvodina, it is nothing more than an ethnic contact zone that has been functioning for centuries. The aim of the study is to present the main factors influencing assimilation in the period after the First World War, to present the formation of the border between Hungary and the Kingdom of Serbia - Croatia - Slovenia (later Yugoslavia) and its qualitative changes. It also covers the situation of the Croatian, Slovenian and Serbian nationalities “trapped” on the Hungarian side, the characteristics of their socio - economic relations with the motherland, the political geographical changes affecting everyday life and their effects. The Yugoslav - Hungarian border relations between the two world wars were marked by the quality of the system of foreign policy relations between the two countries, and the milieu created by the great European policy. The dilapidated Hungarian political administration was able to achieve little success against the strong military actions based on preventive aggression represented by the Serbian side, which accompanied the establishment of the new border.
