Abstract
This paper presents an integrated analysis of the synchrony and diachrony of DP-internal adjectival and nominal predication in Romanian. A single change in the status of the definiteness marker, from a clitic exponent of a functional head in the DP to a suffix on a lexical head, causes polydefiniteness and P3-placement of the definiteness marker to be confined in Modern Romanian to a range much narrower than in Old Romanian.
