Abstract

Discourse markers are a functional group of linguistic elements participating in the organization of discourse: they connect discourse segments and denote pragmatic relationships. In earlier studies, age and gender were found to play a role in the occurrence of various discourse markers and individual language behavior, however, speech tasks were also shown to affect the use of discourse markers. In linguistic profiling, the expert seeks patterns of the language use of the author or speaker, which refer to certain sociodemographic and other characteristics of the person. In the present study, we investigated 4 discourse markers whether they show a difference in frequency concerning the speaker’s gender, age, and education, and according to speech task. The results suggest that discourse markers may contribute to profiling to a limited extent and that the speech task must also be involved as a factor. In addition, the individual patterns in the usage of discourse markers cannot be ignored.
