Abstract

The collection of BaBits Mihály’s manuscripts that has been handed down to posterity stands out among the Hungarian-language literary legacies not only because of its size but also because of its differentiation. A significant part of these manuscripts also presents the philologist with tasks that not encountered in the publication of other – earlier or twentieth-century – works. For example, the publication of fragments that remained unpublished and unfinished during the author’s lifetime, or of significant but unsigned variants that survived at various stages of the author’s writing. Or, for example, the manuscript and printed prefaces of the novel Deathly Hallows, which allow for a publication provenance. All these circumstances shift the emphasis in the traditional work of the philologist dealing with Babits manuscripts. Indeed, in some cases, his work as a transcriber must be supplemented by the author’s work, which has been interrupted or abandoned; and the final result is approximated by the parallel duality of the international publishing practice, which involves both print and electronic editions. As far as the apparatus is concerned, in the critical edition of BaBits Mihály’s works, no genre can be relied upon solely for its literature; interpretation requires, as a minimum, a complete knowledge of the oeuvre. This paper presents the complexity of philology and processing the work.
