Abstract
This acoustic experiment aims to analyse Mandarin Chinese tones in comparison to atonal Hungarian monosyllabic utterances’ intonation contours. Chinese rising Tone 2 was contrasted to Hungarian syntactically unmarked monosylabic question, and to the rising phase of the alternative question as well. Chinese falling Tone 4 was compared to Hungarian monosyllabic declarative and imperative contours. The aim of this experiment was to discover what similarities atonal and tonal f0 patterns share. We compared Chinese and Hungarian natives’ production by extracting maximal and minimal f0, computing f0 range and transition speed, measuring the duration of vocalic phase, as well as obtaining f0 contours. Results show that Chinese Tone 2 is uttered with longer duration, intermediate f0 range, and more concave f0 curve compared to the two Hungarian interrogative contours. Chinese falling Tone 4 exclusively differs from the Hungarian imperative contour in terms of the f0 curve’s shape.
