Abstract
This paper proposes an approach for interpreting clickbait headlines based on functional linguistics, critical theory and corpus linguistics. The proposed approach defines clickbait as a kind of potentiality to help the process of identifying and annotating clickbait headlines. The research describes an annotation schema designed for identifying clickbaiting, showing its adaptability by analysing a sample retrieved from a corpus created during the research process, containing data from three Hungarian news sites (24.hu, Index, Origo). To shed light on the complexity of clickbaiting, I argue that conclusions derived from the process of annotation should be reconceptualised by reflecting on the act of identifying, highlighting the intertwine of language and society.
