Abstract

The first two thirds of the 17th century were one of the most turbulent periods in terms of the relationships between the Lutheran and the Reformed Church. The fact that they disagreed on many issues increased the existing tensions. In the early 1600s, the denominational boundaries were not yet completely fixed in Transdanubia, and the question of which congregation belonged to the Reformed and to the Lutheran church, respectively, was not yet settled. There was also the question of which denomination could appoint a pastor to lead a congregation. All these led to heated debates, which were also reflected in theological issues, especially regarding the question of communion. The various church leaders, István Pathai or János Pálfi Kanizsai on the Reformed side, István Klaszekovits or Bertalan Kiss on the Lutheran side, could not reconcile with each other, and thus could not resolve the tensions. Throughout the 17th century, until the Decade of Mourning, hostility could not be resolved, and there were only remote signs of reconciliation.
