Abstract
This paper discusses the processes whereby a sound change integrates into the phonological system of a language. The structuralist interpretations are contrasted with the current ones, the latter primarily based on works by Bermúdez-Otero, Blevins and Garrett. The issue of whether rhotacism is still an active synchronic phonological rule in Latin is also revisited.
