Abstract
JÁNOS BAUKO: Proper names functioning as identity markers The main functions of proper names are as follows: socially determined individualizing, identifying and differentiating functions. Apart from these basic functions, the present paper overviews other name functions discussed in onomastic literature as well; and the author also presents proper names as identity markers. Proper names refer to the feelings and experiences of self- and group identity. The paper examines how the use of proper names (personal names, place names, names for institutions) adopted by people of Hungarian minority in Slovakia identifies ethnic identity. Proper names might refer to individual or collective ethnic/language affiliation; they might function as ethnic symbols.
