Abstract

The long 17 th century, extending from the Peace of Vienna in 1606 to the Treaty of Sz a tmár in 1711, occupies a special place within the history of the Kingdom of Hungary. Its interpretation has been dete rmined by successive histor i-‐ ographies since the 19 th century, with regard to the 17 th century, first as the most decisive period of the Hungarian struggles for independence, and then as the time of attemp t s launched from the Principality of Transylvania at the unif i-‐ cation of the Hungarian Kingdom. On the basis of several years of archival r e-‐ search, and following in the footspes of such historians as Robert J.W. Evans from Oxford, Thomas Winkelbauer from Vienna and Jean Bérenger from Paris, the author of the present study rather examines the history of the Hungarian Kingdom in the 17 th century as part of a relationship between the Central Eur o-‐ pean Habsburg Monarchy and the Kingdom of Hungary, The Habsburg court of Vien na and the Hungarian political é lite. Wit hin such a framework, the hist o ry of Hungary between 1606 and 1711 can be regarded as the century of ru p tures and compromises, which guaranteed the privileges and liberties of the Hunga r-‐ ian estates, and secur ed for the Hungarian political é lite a decisive role in sha p-‐ ing the d o mestic politics, loca l administration and judicial s ystem of Hungary
