Abstract

Counter-Rotating Open Rotors (CROR) have advantageous propulsion efficiencies as compared to turbofan engines, but before their widespread application, their noise emission has to be dealt with. The noise they generate consists of tonal and broadband components. The tonal components appear in narrow frequency bands with large amplitudes and therefore they can easily be investigated. The broadband noise characteristically has smaller amplitudes, and in general it is not the dominant noise source in many frequency bins, but still a quite significant noise component. The literature provides a signal pre-processing method for separating out the broadband components of a CROR, the signal of which has been shown to be appropriate for the investigation of broadband spectra. In this article, this pre-processing method is further developed and combined with beamforming in order to localize the broadband noise sources of the investigated CROR. The resulting broadband signals have been processed using beamforming and investigated as compared to the results of former studies regarding the broadband components of the noise of a CROR.
